This genetic pathology occurs in children whose mothers have suffered serious illnesses, are carrying a child at the age of more than 35-40 years.

It is impossible to prevent the conception of a child with Down syndrome, but modern medical technologies can prevent its birth. There are many diagnostic techniques that allow you to get information about the health of a child in the prenatal period of development.

Amniocentesis. For a long time, this was the only method of diagnosing this genetic deviation. Amniotic fluid analysis, however, is not shown to all pregnant women, because the procedure itself increases the risk of premature birth, and even if the analysis shows the well-being of the child, the mother may lose the child. Perhaps, when the diagnosis of Down syndrome becomes safe, this technology can be used more widely. Today, amniocentesis for the detection of Down syndrome during pregnancy is used as a diagnosis of women from a group of special risk – after severe illnesses, having other children or close relatives with Down syndrome in the family, as well as late-term births.

Antenatal diagnostics. Modern technologies suggest the presence of Down syndrome in a child based on the results of venous blood analysis. The blood is examined for the presence of biochemical markers.

Ultrasound diagnostics. Ultrasound also allows us to assume that an unborn child has Down syndrome. Ultrasound examination at the age of a child from 11 weeks already allows you to notice signs of this genetic disorder (accumulation of subcutaneous fluid in the collar area of the neck), although this is clearly not enough to detect Down syndrome – more than 20% of the "positive" results of such studies turned out to be false.

The most effective detection of Down syndrome during pregnancy is when a complex of diagnostic techniques is used – blood analysis for biochemical markers, ultrasound, plasma protein level, estriol (female sex hormone), alpha-fetoprotein, as well as hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), plus analysis of amniotic fluid. However, this approach gives the least number of false positive results at the prenatal age of a child from 16 and even from 18 weeks. And if we consider that the child's heart begins to beat already on the 21st day after conception, then many parents no longer dare to take drastic measures against their own child, even if they are not ready to take care of a child with Down syndrome later.

In turn, the traditional "triple test" (alpha-fetoprotein, estriol and gonadotropin) gives up to 10% false positive results (and this is at the gestation period of 16-20 weeks!), analysis only for alpha-fetoprotein – and even more than 40%. And, for example, in the UK, in order for the screening program to be recognized at the academic and state level, it is considered that the number of false positive results cannot exceed 3%. By the way, there is no unified program for the examination of pregnant women for the detection of Down syndrome in the UK. However, this is understandable – the country has a well-established system of rehabilitation of such children, and even if parents refuse to raise them, there are foster families where such children are quite successfully raised, trained and socialized.
